The fix is a handicap you design on purpose: one skill, one task, a date, and the racket handed straight back.

Start With the Model. Harness What You Cannot Afford to Guess.

Every team is arguing model versus code one ticket at a time, and most of them are arguing the wrong thing. Start with the model. Let it run in a loop until the check passes. Then build the environment it works in, and write down the few actions it cannot take on its own. That is the harness, and its length is set by risk, not by how much the vendor charges.

Sour Grapes Cost More Than the Grapes

Law 36 of the 48 Laws of Power tells you to disdain what you cannot have and to ignore your enemies, because ignoring them is the best revenge. Half of that is true. You Optimized Away Everything Worth Doing

A best practice is what worked in enough other places to survive averaging, written down after the consensus formed and sanded of every edge so it can travel. It will get you to the average of everyone else who follows it. That was always its whole job. The name is the only part that overpromises.

Every company tells its launch story at offsites: the brutal weeks, the 2am deploy, the save. The story is true, and it trains everyone to believe intensity is what excellence looks like. I am a fan of great service. When I see it exemplified I try to share it. For example, QuikTrip does a great job #winning. Another company that has always impressed me is Discount Tire. They always greet me right away. They fix my tires for free when repairable. They give me a free air check when my tires are low. All of this even on tires not purchased from them. WOW! They never give me problems when I need tires rotated or tires replaced under warranty that I did purchase from them.

A woman and her son were entering the Subway as my daughter and I were getting out of the car. My daughter uttered, "Hoochie Mama" under her breath. I chastised her for being inappropriate. Her response to me was, "Well she is." Granted the woman was probably in her late forties, had on 5 inch heels, booty shorts and next to nothing for a top with her adolescent son in tote. Sadly, my daughter was right.
