You keep shopping for more hours: earlier alarms, cleaner calendars, better tools. Seneca's diagnosis was sharper. Life is not short. Most of it gets wasted by people who do not feel its weight. A child, a diagnosis, a business with real customers compresses the day and somehow yields more. The compression did not steal the time. It exposed how much was already drifting. You need higher stakes, not another system.

Just This Once Is Never Once

You said yes to the small ask and called it pragmatism. Access, politics, keeping the relationship warm. Temporary yeses do not stay temporary. Learn to read the psyche of any organization you work for, invest in, or lead, because companies with character survive their setbacks and companies without it decline with pristine assets.

People Want Something to Believe In. Don't Make It You.

Law 27 of the 48 Laws of Power tells you to play on people's need to believe and create a cultlike following. Keep your words vague, favor enthusiasm over thinking, hand out rituals, collect the devotion. The need Greene identified is real. People are starving for something worth believing in. The law fails at the harvest. The Greeks called his method goeteia, the enchanter's craft that bypasses judgment instead of building it, and they left us a portrait of exactly where it ends: a con man with a puppet snake god who opened his rites by expelling every skeptic in the crowd, because one honest question would have brought the whole thing down.

If You Explain Everything, They Learn Nothing

Don't Make Your Retrospectives Confusing

If explaining an activity in a retrospective takes more than a minute or two it probably isn't very effective. Don't fall into the trap of making things too complex. Activities shouldn't be complicated they should be fluid. Giving participants too many options and being unclear with instructions makes it difficult to fluid with sharing thoughts.

I am a fan of great service. When I see it exemplified I try to share it. For example, QuikTrip does a great job #winning. Another company that has always impressed me is Discount Tire. They always greet me right away. They fix my tires for free when repairable. They give me a free air check when my tires are low. All of this even on tires not purchased from them. WOW! They never give me problems when I need tires rotated or tires replaced under warranty that I did purchase from them.

You Can't Handle the Truth

A woman and her son were entering the Subway as my daughter and I were getting out of the car. My daughter uttered, "Hoochie Mama" under her breath. I chastised her for being inappropriate. Her response to me was, "Well she is." Granted the woman was probably in her late forties, had on 5 inch heels, booty shorts and next to nothing for a top with her adolescent son in tote. Sadly, my daughter was right.
