The Behavior: Believing that leadership experience exempts you from the learning curve that AI-first work requires.
The Moment I Knew: Sitting in a strategy session where my team was explaining how AI had changed their research process, and I kept interrupting with suggestions based on how research “should” work. The classic version: Rolling out AI tools while maintaining promotion criteria based on individual achievement, decision-making processes that exclude AI insights, and meeting structures where admitting you used AI assistance is seen as weakness rather than wisdom.
Pattern 5: The Panic
The Behavior: Demanding innovation and AI experimentation while simultaneously creating zero tolerance for the failures, quality issues, and unexpected outcomes that are inherent to genuine innovation.
The Day I Lost My Shit: We’d been pushing AI experimentation for months. Then an AI-generated client report contained a factual error that made it to the client. Instead of examining what we learned about our quality processes, I panicked. Called an emergency meeting. Implemented approval layers that guaranteed nothing innovative would ever reach a client again. This is the one that kills me. Leadership announces they want “bold AI experimentation” and then loses their shit the first time an AI-generated report contains an error or an AI-assisted decision doesn’t work out perfectly.
The organization learns instantly: Innovation is what we say we want, conformity is what we actually reward.
What Actually Works
Here’s what I’ve learned about AI-first leadership:
Leadership is not about managing AI transformation; it’s about modeling the human-AI collaboration you want to see throughout the organization.
When I finally started leading AI-first initiatives that actually worked, it wasn’t because I found the perfect change management methodology. It was because I stopped trying to manage the transformation from outside it and started demonstrating the transformation from within it.

How is my focus on managing AI adoption protecting me from the vulnerability of being transformed by AI collaboration?
What am I more afraid of—the failure that comes with genuine innovation, or the mediocrity that comes with avoiding failure?
What part of my soul am I starving by choosing the comfort of obsolescence over the discomfort of growth?
The answers will tell you whether you’re leading transformation or just lying to yourself about change management.
But here’s the question that cuts deepest: Have you earned the right to call yourself a leader in this age?
Not because of your title. Not because of your past success. Not because you can talk about AI strategy in board meetings.
Because you’ve done the work of being transformed by the very change you’re asking your organization to embrace.
Because you’ve stopped protecting your expertise and started serving something larger than your comfort.
